PURCHASE PRICE VS. ACTUAL COST OF A KNUCKLE BOOM CRANE
Crane Buying Guide · Part 3
Purchase price vs. actual cost
When comparing knuckle boom cranes, the purchase price is the most visible factor and often the one that carries the most weight in the final decision. But it's only one part of the real cost: the other, less visible part, is how long that equipment will generate revenue before becoming obsolete.
How is the actual cost of a crane calculated?
It's calculated from three pieces of information: purchase price, residual value, and useful life. The longer the useful life, the lower the annual cost of the equipment, even if the purchase price is higher. Two cranes with different prices can have very similar annual costs if the more expensive one lasts significantly longer.
Why the "S" class isn't just a marketing promise?
The "S" rating isn't a marketing promise: it's an engineering specification that the manufacturer must declare in the catalog, allowing for an accurate estimation of the equipment's actual lifespan.
The question that changes the decision
It's not "How much does this crane cost?" but "How much will it cost me each year of operation?" This question often determines which option is truly the most cost-effective.
At Transgrúas, we help you calculate this using the technical specifications of each piece of equipment, not just its sale price.
