HOW TO COMPARE BENEFITS BETWEEN CRANES? KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

November 28, 2017

  • "S" classification on truck mounted cranes
  • Compared load diagram Fassi F1650RA vs Effer 1750
  • Load diagram Fassi F1650RA vs Palfinger PK165000

There are 3 basic objective concepts that will determie two questions: the performance and life (working cycles) of a hydraulic crane.

After visiting Fassi's factory a few weeks ago, we thought about the times that our commercial and technical departments tell us with impotence, how in general when comparing models of Fassi cranes with models of other crane competitors, the criteria that prevails in the Comparison is mainly economical (price of the crane), leaving in the background other more technical aspects and therefore not being too fair in the characteristics of the comparison. We think that there are different factors that must be taken into account before making a decision as important as the purchase of a crane so, let us explain it by comparing the Fassi F1650 crane with correpondent models of cranes of the competition of the main brands with global presence as the Palfinger PK1650002 and Effer 1750.

  1. One of the main distinguishing points in the choice of a crane is its useful life: in this sense the characteristic that will determine the longevity of a crane is the class in which the manufacturer decides to build it and, the class is determined by the characters "S1", "S2", being that cranes of the same range built in class S1 are manufactured to perform 32,000 work cycles, for 64,000 cycles planned for a crane in class S2. In the comparison that concerns us, the Fassi F1650RA crane is built in S2 class while the comparative cranes of Effer and Palfinger are built in class S1. This means that although they compete in the same range, the Fassi crane has twice the useful life, if it is used at 100% capacity.
  2. Load performance (tn / m): it is the second key data to compare and this sensitive data is important to give it with the greatest possible transparency and real work positions. We can see this information in the load diagrams, where the Fassi loads 120 tn/m, just like the Effer, by 114 tn/m from the Palfinger crane, at a maximum hydraulic outreach of 19.75 m, 19.72 and 18.6 m respectively. In addition, the torque of the Fassi crane is also 10% higher than that of Palfinger, Effer does not offer this information in the catalog, so we can not compare.
  3. Dsesign and dimensions of the crane: although this data is more complicated to identify, say that the geometry of the arms of the crane has a direct impact on the load power. In the case of the Fassi crane that we are comparing, the design of the secondary arms and extensions make it to be more powerful in short load. The total dimensions of the folding will affect the space required for mounting: in this sense, the Palfinger crane in transport position the arms of the crane lower from the base 220 mm and the space needed for assembly is 3,224 mm, the Effer needs 2,895 mm vs 2,935 mm needed for the Fassi.

In conclusion, it is important that when buying a crane to compare prices and main characteristics, so we wanted to highlight the two points that we tend to not pay attention to when looking at which crane is the most appropriate: the first is the useful life, if we have a team that will work for 10 years at full capacity while another will work for 20 years, we could pay practically twice for that team as we will double bill with it. On the other hand when we compare characteristics that are from a practical point of view: it is useless to know how many tons we can load with the folded crane, since that way we will never load it, if we compare a crane loaded at 0 meters with another one at 5, we will not be being accurate in the analysis. The Spanish crane market is very competitive, with a large number of cranes and a high presence of heavy dutry cranes: they certainly value this type of nuances.

We hope this information can help you to always choose the machine that is most useful and profitable (which is not the same as economic) and from our side we will continue working not only in having the best cranes but in communicating them in the most fair and objective possible way for our customers to make the best decision based on their needs.
