NEW VERSION OF STANDARD UNE 58161:2025 FOR KNUCKLE BOOM CRANE OPERATORS
The update streamlines training for experienced professionals.
The UNE 58161 standard has been updated to its 2025 version, introducing significant changes that especially benefit operators with previous experience operating loader cranes (LH, jib cranes, or truck-mounted cranes).
What changes with the new standard
Recognition of professional experience Section 11 of the UNE 58161:2025 standard establishes an innovative procedure that allows experienced professionals to obtain their certification more efficiently. The requirements are:
- Proof of experience as a GHA Operator
- Complete a reduced 6-hour theoretical course
- Pass a theoretical exam (according to section 7.3.1)
- Take a practical assessment (section 7.3.2) administered by an accredited entity
This change represents a unique opportunity for experienced operators to formalize their skills without having to complete traditional full training.

An industry-driven reform
This important update has been possible thanks to the work of COFIGRUHA (the Technical Commission of Manufacturers and Importers of Articulated Hydraulic Cranes, created within ASCATRAVI in 2005, made up of the main manufacturers and importers of articulated hydraulic cranes), an association of which Transgrúas is an active member. As such, COFIGRUHA looks after the interests of crane operators and constantly works to improve training and certification conditions in the sector.
The collaboration between organizations like ours and COFIGRUHA has allowed this reform to respond to the real needs of professional crane operators, facilitating recognition of their experience without compromising safety standards.
