THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A HYDRAULIC CRANE
Crane Buying Guide · Part 1.
Before purchasing a knuckle boom crane, it is important to precisely define the work it will need to perform. Load, reach, frequency of use, the vehicle, and the type of application influence the choice far more than a simple tonnage figure.
In this first part of our Crane Buying Guide, we review the key aspects that should be clear before you start comparing models.
The load and reach you actually need
The first piece of information is the maximum weight you need to lift, but that alone is not enough. The type of load matters, too—and above all, the distance at which the crane will need to operate.
Capacity decreases as reach increases. That is why two cranes with similar tonnage ratings can offer very different performance levels when analyzing the actual work they must perform.
How much the crane will be used
Frequency of use also influences the choice. A crane intended for occasional maneuvers is very different from equipment that operates intensively throughout the entire workday.
Defining the expected intensity from the start helps select a configuration suited to the job's demands.
The type of work to be performed
Each application presents different needs. Construction, material transport, machinery handling, recycling, forestry work, or industrial services may require different reaches, capacities, and configurations.
The right crane is the one that effectively meets actual working conditions, not necessarily the one with the highest nominal capacity.
The vehicle needed to mount the crane
The crane and the vehicle must be considered together. The truck type, axle configuration, available mounting space, and resulting payload can determine which solution is viable.
At Transgrúas, we analyze these factors before proposing equipment, ensuring the choice aligns with the client's actual operations rather than just catalog figures. The right crane is the one that suits your job.
